Plastic straw ban: what can you still use?

Since 3 July 2021, single-use plastic straws may no longer be placed on the EU market. This is set out in the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive (Directive (EU) 2019/904), which Belgium has also transposed into law. Since then, many hospitality businesses and event organisers have been looking for an alternative. Here's what the ban means and which options are available.

What does the ban cover?

The ban applies to straws made wholly or partly of plastic. That includes so-called "bioplastic" straws such as PLA: under the directive, these also count as plastic. If you're unsure about a specific product, ask your supplier what it is made of.

What are the alternatives?

• Plant-based straws such as wheat and rice straws: single use, with no plastic.
• Paper straws: widely used, but they go soft quickly and contain glue.
• Reusable straws made of glass or metal: sustainable at home, but in hospitality they need washing and tend to go missing.
